NULCA certification

NULCA — the National Utility Locating Contractors Association — sets the employer- recognized standard for working locators in the U.S. This page is the entry point for the live SureTrace pathway: the credential framing, five prep modules, live cohort registration, and a practice assessment to gauge where you stand today.

The credential

What NULCA certification is

A short framing of the trade association behind the credential, the exam domains the prep is built around, and the deliverable side the exam equally tests.

NULCA, the trade association
NULCA is the national trade association for the locating industry; the certification exam is the employer-recognized credential for working locators in the United States.

Earning the credential signals to an employer that the locator has been examined against the canonical domains of the trade — not just one firm's internal checklist or one municipality's utility mix. SureTrace's NULCA prep is built around those same five domains so the assessment and the prep stay aligned.

The five prep domains

811 + private-side scope · equipment selection · locating theory and field procedures · signal application and frequency selection · field safety. The same five the NULCA practice assessment already instruments.

Deliverable-side companion

ASCE 38 quality-level closeout and the field report are the exam's output half — covered in the advanced track at Records & documentation rather than as a sixth prep module.

Who it serves

Credential framed for locators and the people who hire them

The page is written for two reader-pairs in the trade — the locator doing the work and the employer / procurement side evaluating the work.

Locators seeking professional standing
People doing the work who want a recognized credential above the operator level.

Early- and mid-career locators wanting a recognized credential above the operator level; current private-locator supervisors prepping for employer-recognized advancement.

Employers and procurement
The people hiring locators and writing the language that asks for covered work.

Firms vetting new hires; project owners writing RFP language that asks for NULCA-certified coverage; procurement teams evaluating locating subcontractors.

How the prep differs

Five-domain prep built by working locators

What sets the SureTrace prep apart — domain framing, real engagement context, and a practice assessment already on the site.

Five-domain framing rooted in the field
The prep modules are organized around the same five domains the existing NULCA practice assessment already instruments — mapping tightly to the canonical NulcaPracticeTopic enum used by the quiz on /training/nulca-practice.
Real field operation, not generic flashcards
The prep is built by people who run a private-locating firm (SureTrace); the examples and procedures come from actual campus, right-of-way, and corridor engagements — not from generic study guides.
Practice assessment already on-site
The NULCA practice assessment on /training/nulca-practice (15 questions, instant feedback, weak-topic callout) is already a working instrumented practice run. Take one today to see the exam feel.
Live prep modules

Five modules, available now

Five live modules keyed to the same five-domain framing the practice assessment instruments. Each module deepens an existing Foundations lesson.

The practice quiz is the existing on-site instrument for the same five domains the prep modules target — take it first to gauge where you stand.

Module 01 · 811
NULCA prep · Module 01 — 811 and private-side scope
Deepens Foundations 01 (what 811 covers and where the private-side band begins) for the exam context.

Open the module lesson, knowledge check, and field-ready diagram set.

Module 02 · Equipment
NULCA prep · Module 02 — Equipment selection in practice
Deepens Foundations 02 (the on-site surface pre-sweep and the equipment vocabulary a private locator runs before any geophysics).

Next step
Continue through the live NULCA pathway
The five prep modules and practice assessment are live. Walk the modules in order, take a practice run, or send a note when you are ready to register for a cohort.

Cohort interest is collected by the contact form on the engagement form so instructors can reply with cohort details rather than routing through a mailer.
