Multi-frequency signal interpretation in congested corridor sweeps

Corridors have become more congested every decade this century, and the single-frequency read that worked on a less dense corridor no longer carries the day. A corridor that was easy to read in the 1990s — open trenching, mostly ferrous targets, modest service density — is now a stacked environment of mixed-age materials: cast iron, asbestos-cement transitional pipe, PVC and ductile laterals, abandoned segments the prior capital projects left in place, comm runs at multiple depths, and the increasingly common shielded fiber runs that a single-frequency receiver cannot read reliably. The methodology shift is to interpret across frequencies rather than on a single frequency.
The practical implication is that the field sweep plans a frequency pass, not a single-frequency sweep. On each target asset the team records the response at the primary frequency already in use at the site, and re-records at a complementary frequency at the same mark. The two responses are reconciled in the closeout: a target that reads cleanly at one frequency and weakly at the other is flagged as a candidate for further investigation, and a target that reads cleanly at both frequencies is recorded as a verified asset at the higher confidence level. A target that reads weakly at both frequencies is recorded as undetermined — and an undetermined asset is treated differently from a verified asset throughout the rest of the engagement.
What changes about the field sweep cadence is the equipment posture. Multi-frequency interpretation cannot run on a single-frequency receiver in single-frequency mode; it requires a receiver that can hold both frequencies in pass and a team that can compare the responses on the same mark without losing the swept coverage. The deeper point is that multi-frequency interpretation is not an upcharge on a standard sweep; it is the methodology that a congested corridor requires by default. The shift to multi-frequency interpretation is the shift that closes that gap — not by working harder on a single frequency, but by working with a different unit of verification.
